Donna Lynne (Blomgren) Askren died peacefully at home on the evening of October 2, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born November 13, 1948 in Frankfurt, Germany, Donna was the oldest daughter of Bettee Elouise (Breckenridge) Blomgren and Col. Holton Eugene Blomgren.
Donna spent her early years in many locales including Germany, Thailand, Alexandria, VA and Indianapolis, IN. She graduated from Francis C. Hammond High School in Alexandria, VA and attended the University of Georgia where she majored in French language (1970). After teaching high school in Pensacola, FL, Donna returned to Athens and worked at the University of Georgia Library. During her employment at UGA, she went on to earn a Master of Social Work degree, specializing in Gerontology (1987). Continuing to work for the University, she utilized her skills as a social worker on a volunteer basis within the community. She retired from the University of Georgia in 2000.
A lover of all living things, Donna had innumerable animal companions throughout her life, was an accomplished equestrian, and an exceptional gardener. She was fun-loving, thoughtful, and generous, always willing to give of herself for others. She especially loved spending time with her family and many, many friends.
Donna was proceeded in death by her younger sister, Diane Blomgren Sather, and is survived by her husband of 41 years, Dr. Ralph M. Askren, and siblings, Dr. Peter F. Blomgren and Philip M. Blomgren.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Tuckston United Methodist Church (4175 Lexington Road in Athens, GA) on Saturday, December 9th at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Donna’s memory to an animal charity of one’s choosing or to the American Cancer Society.
