Don Norris, 72, passed away October 25, 2009.
A longtime resident of Oconee County, Mr. Norris was preceded in death by his parents, Iva Hunter and John Clinton Norris and daughter, Melissa Anne Norris. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia and a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church.
He was the longest continuous serving Commissioner (over 20 years) for Oconee County. He was a visionary and constantly planned for the future of this community. He had the unique ability to "see the big picture" and yet monitor details so long range goals may be accomplished.
Mr. Norris was a charter member of the Oconee County Rotary Club in 1980, where he had perfect attendance until his recent illness. In 1984, he and then-Rotary President G. A. Nasworthy, founded the M&K Foundation in memory of Melissa Anne Norris and Karen Nasworthy. This foundation, which Mr. Norris has served as President since its inception, has provided many scholarships to Oconee County High School students and continues to expand each year.
Memorial services will be Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Mars Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Jones and Dr. Sheila Bookout officiating. Interment will be private.
Survivors include his wife, Donetta; daughter and son-in-law, Tracey and Steve Kell of Gainesville, GA; brother, Wayne Norris of Bishop, GA; three grandchildren, Deidre, Lauren and Donny; two nephews, Patrick Norris and Eric Norris.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to M&K Foundation, PO Box 1394, Watkinsville, GA 30677 or a favorite charity.
