Dennis Edward Stringer of Watkinsville, GA, passed into Glory on October 29,2021 at the age of 94. He was born at home on May 3, 1927 in Stringer, MS, near Laurel, MS, the 6th of 9 children. He attended Jones Junior College then enlisted in the US Navy and served in San Diego, CA. After WW II ended, he graduated from Mississippi State College in 1950 with a degree in Agriculture. He was an avid fan of the State bulldogs and later, the Atlanta Falcons. While at State he was inducted into Alpha Zeta Honorary Agriculture Fraternity. He was employed by the Mississippi Agricultural Extension Service from 1950- 1954 and married Betty Ann Powers. He took a job with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 1955 as Officer-in-charge of the Atlanta office. He served as Southern Area Supervisor of Poultry Market News from 1964-1972 and National Supervisor from 1972-1978 and retired in 1985. He served as President of the National Market News Association in 1977-1978 and received the prestigious Market News Man of the Year award in 1978. He served as President of the Avondale (Dekalb County) High School PTA, High School Dugout Club and High School Touchdown Club. He became active in the American Legion after retirement, serving as Adjutant-Finance Officer and Captain of the Color/Honor Guard at the Post level, and Jr. Vice Commander, Adjutant and Finance Officer of the 10th District. He also served as Chef de Gare of Voiture 499 of the 40 & 8. He was known for his kind heart and sense of humor. He loved hunting and fishing and golf and was very proud of his hole in one. He was an avid gardener. He grew beautiful hybrid tea roses and vegetable.
He is survived by daughter Denise Stringer Rice, son Perry Winfield Stringer (Angie), 6 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren, as well as sister Annie and brother Royce. He was predeceased by his parents, Aletha and Ed Stringer, brothers Lester, Marvin, Elvin, and Ray, sisters Nobie and Nezzie, and grandson Zach. In his own words – “A pretty good record for a chicken plucker and a long way from Stringer, MS, just down the road from SoSo and Hot Coffee.”
