Retired UGA Veterinary Professor Dr. David W. Dreesen, of Wintervlle, GA, died on November 12, 2015 at 81 years of age due to complications from Myasthenia Gravis. He is survived by Alice Elizabeth "Libby" Dreesen, his loving wife of 60 years, as well as his son and daughter, Lance Dreesen and Laura Light, brother Paul Dreesen and four grandchildren.
With a distinguished career in Veterinary Epidemiology, Dr. Dreesen held the positions of Georgia State Public Health Veterinarian and Assistant State Epidemiologist, Executive Director of the Atlanta Humane Society and SPCA, and Public Health Scientist with the Pan American Health Organization of the United Nations. In 1980, he returned to his alma mater, accepting a full time teaching and research position at the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Dreesen was also an active member of the Winterville community where he lived for 37 years. In recognition of his service, he was awarded with the Key to the City and named Citizen of the Year in 2014.
A Memorial Service for Dr. Dreesen will be held at 1 PM, December 20th, at the University of Georgia Chapel, 109 Herty Field, Athens, GA 30602.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either the UGA Foundation (earmarked for the David W. & Alice E. Dreesen Scholarship at the College of Veterinary Medicine), or the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, 355 Lexington Ave., 15th Floor, New York, NY 10017-6603.
