Dallas N. Fields

Dallas Norman Fields, 84, resident of Magnolia Estates, Elberton, Ga., died Friday, August 12, 2011 at Nancy Hart Nursing Home after a struggle with Alzheimer's Disease, Heart Disease and Diabetes.
He was born January 14, 1927 in Elberton, Ga., to the late Clarence Lee Fields, Sr. and Jewel Sorrells Fields. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Clarence Lee Fields, Jr. and James Richard Ancel Fie
After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the US Navy and was in the 4th Special Naval Construction Battalion, the "Sea Bees". His unit until went into the invasion of Okinawa with the 3rd Marine Division. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Elberton and married his wife, Ida Merle Threlkeld Fields. He began a life long career with the U.S. Postal Service. He retired in 1989 after reaching President of the Rural Letter Carriers Association. He remained active and interested in the many friends and postal workers in all fifty states which he had represented until his illness. He was an active member for sixty years of New Hope Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder, Clerk of the Session, and Sunday School Teacher. He was also a Boy Scout Troup Leader. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and husband, always giving love and of himself.
He is survived by his dear wife of 64 years of Comer: a daughter, Linda Fields Dargan and her husband Shaw of Darlington, SC; three grandchildren, Nichole Dargan Ambos and her husband, Hal of Savannah, Ga. and Caroline Shorey Dargan and Archie Shaw Dargan, IV both of Myrtle Beach, SC; a great grandchild, Caroline Shaw Ambos of Savannah; one sister, Erah Beady and her husband Lewis of Anderson, SC.
A graveside service will be held Monday, August 15, 2011 at 11AM at Comer Cemetery with Mr. Tommy Fields and Rev. Richard Hoard officiating. The family invites friends to drop in this Saturday afternoon or Sunday afternoon at Magnolia Estates, 68 College Avenue, apartments 42 and 44, Elberton, Ga.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Alzheimer's Association, 1925 Century Blvd., Suite 10, Atlanta, GA 30345 or the University Of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine.
Lord and Stephens Danielsville Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
