Dale Yarbrough Dorman, 68, passed away January 9, 2012 at St. Mary's Hospice House in Athens, Georgia. Ms. Dorman, a native of Thomasville, Georgia, was born October 17, 1943 to her parents, Austin and Wilma Yarbrough. Ms. Dorman was Extension Housing Specialist Emeritus, having served with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service from 1982 until her retirement in 1997.
After graduating from Central High School in 1961, Dale attended and graduated from Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, GA in 1965, with a B.S. in Education, with a major in Home Economics. She received her Master's degree from Ga. Southern in 1979. Prior to moving to Athens as state Extension Housing Specialist, Dale was employed as a County Extension Agent in Macon, GA from 1974-1982. Dale has previously been Interior Designer with Adams Construction Company and Interior Decorator for House of Rossoff, both in Bristol, TN. From 1965-1969, Dale worked as a Home Economist for Georgia Power Co. in Manchester, GA.
Ms. Dorman was a member of numerous professional organizations and clubs including Epsilon Sigma Phi (Alpha Beta Chapter) and the Ga. Association of Extension Home Economists. She received many outstanding recognitions and awards. These include State Staff Achievement Award from Epsilon Sigma Phi (1992), State Staff Professional of the Year Award from GAEHE (1985), Georgia Extension Service Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Response to an Emergency (1985), Distinguished Service Award from GAEHE (1982) and Outstanding Communicator Award for Television Program Host, GAEHE (1981). Dale's interests and hobbies in addition to interior decoration included clothing construction and design, gardening, golf, tennis, do-it-yourself home projects.
Dale is survived by her sister, Kay Browning, of Madison, Florida and one niece, Kim Whigham (Alan) and two great-nephews, Ben Taylor Whigham and Jonathan Whigham of Madison, Florida, several cousins, aunts, and a wonderful network of friends in Athens, GA and all over the state of Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, Gene Browning of Madison, FL.
A visitation will be held at Lord and Stephens (East) Funeral Home, Athens, GA on Saturday, January 14, 2012 from 6 until 8PM.
Graveside services and interment will be conducted by Lord and Stephens Funeral Home at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Thomasville, GA, located at 600-700 East Jackson Street (U. S. Hwy. 319 N.) Thomasville, Georgia 31792 on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 3PM.
