Reverend Curtis Everett Hammond, 87, died Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at his residence in Winterville, GA.

Born in Greenwood, SC, he was the son of the late Samuel Clarence Hammond and Ina Belle Ogletree Hammond. In addition to his parents, Curtis was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Jean Hammond, his sister, Margarite Hammond Wood, and his brother, Wayne Hammond. He was a member of Cornerstone Church of God. Mr. Hammond served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and also served in The National Guard. He was employed with Southern Bell Telephone Co. for 33 years. He became an Ordained Minister in the Church of God and was a bi-vocational pastor. He organized the first Church of God in Greensboro, GA in 1955. He served as a full-time Pastor at Cartersville Church of God in the late 1950's and later returned to serve as Senior Adult Pastor. He also served as the Senior Pastor at Homer Church of God and Freedom Church of God. He was faithful in serving as interim Pastor in several churches and also served in jail and nursing home ministries.

Survivors include his son and daughter in law: Johnny and Robin Hammond of Athens; daughter and son in law: Jenny and Bobby Whitlow of Winterville; grandchildren: Dawn Hammond, Jason Hammond, Mandy Whitlow, Clint and wife Erin Whitlow, and Rebekah Whitlow; great grandchildren: Joshua Hammond, Reagan Hammond, Anna Grace Whitlow, and Landon Hartman. Sisters: Juanita Porterfield of Watkinsville, Lolita Brown of Hull and brother: Kenneth Hammond of Athens; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 11:00 am at Lord & Stephens East Chapel with Revs. Robert Sheppard, Scott Sheppard and Raymond Duncan officiating. Burial will follow at Athens Memorial Gardens. Clint Whitlow, Jason Hammond, Terry Wilkes, Ricky Wilkes, Brad Elliott, Jay Tucker and Terry Tiller will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm on Friday, July 25, 2014 at the funeral home.
