Cpt. Robert Edward Thornton, 70, completed his tour of duty on Earth on Sunday, April 30, 2023.
Born on August 8, 1952 to the late William C. Thornton, Jr. and Philomene McMahon Thornton, Bob graduated from Clarke Central High School, Class of ‘71 and the University of Georgia with a BBA degree. Robert Edward was Captain in the Marine Corps and in the reserves after active duty. After many years as a peace officer, he was recruited while a bailiff in Winder, GA into the Georgia National Guard. He served a tour as a sergeant in Iraq and then in Afghanistan. Throughout his adult life he was a passionate defender of the 2nd amendment and participated in numerous firearm competitions, winning many contests.
Affectionately known as "Bob" or "Bobdog," he will be remembered for his neverending loyalty and faithfulness. Though he was a proud native Athenian, he resided in Oglethorpe County later in life. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic parish in Athens and St. James Catholic Church in Madison.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William C. Thornton III.
Bob is survived by other relatives, especially his beloved cousin, H. Carlton Thornton.
A visitation will be held at Lord and Stephens, East on Friday evening, May 12 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, May 13 at St. James Catholic Church, 562 Vine St, Madison, GA at 10:00 a.m. A reception and celebration of life will be held in the parish hall immediately following the mass. The graveside service with full military honors will be held at Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens, GA on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
