C. Peter Wyllie passed away on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at the age of 87.
Peter was born in Quincy, MA. He graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He married Martha Laidlaw in June of 1959 and in May of 1962, they had completed their family with their two children. In 1975, they moved from Westboro, MA to Athens, GA for Peter to work as President and later CEO of Fowler Products, until his retirement in 1996.
In the early 80s, they moved to Watkinsville and never left. Peter was a prolific reader, reading the Wall Street Journal and local papers cover-to-cover as well as devouring books of different genres. Upon finishing a book, he would donate it to the Watkinsville library. He was a huge proponent of libraries and served on the Bogart Board of Director committee in 1997 for the building of the Bogart Library. He and Martha enjoyed traveling in the states as well as abroad with the family as well as for his work. One of their favorite excursions was weekend trips to Ogunquit, ME to eat lobster at Barnacle Billy’s. During his retirement years, he enjoyed visiting different companies in Watkinsville to learn more about them, while getting to know the owner and staff. Martha Wyllie passed away in 2004. Peter and Mary Martin married in 2006 and enjoyed stateside and abroad jaunts.
Peter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was 15 years old. Upon his death, he had had the disease for 72 years. Whenever he had the chance, he would speak with other Type 1 diabetics about the new research into different devices. He was very proud of earning his Joslin Diabetes 50-year Medal. He is preceded in death by his parents, John H. Wyllie and Hilda Wyllie; and his first wife, Martha K. Wyllie. Peter is survived by his second wife, Mary Martin of Watkinsville; his daughter, Jennifer Gilliam of Athens; his son, Scott Wyllie of Elberton; their spouses Stephen Gilliam and Cathy Wyllie; his three grandchildren, Jarod Gilliam, Anna Katherine Wyllie, and Elliot Wyllie; his brothers, Jack Wyllie and Jim Wyllie; and several nieces and nephews.
Those who knew Peter will remember him as one who was excellent at giving solicited as well as unsolicited advice. Memories his children and grandchildren will cherish.
