Hull, GA - George C. (Cleve) Holladay, 91, died peacefully of natural causes on May 3, 2007 at the Winterville Retirement Center.
Mr. Holladay was born July 6, 1915 in Weakley County, TN. He graduated from Murray State Teachers College, Murray, KY in 1937 and taught elementary school math in Harlan, KY. In December 1938 Mr. Holladay began his 37 year career with the U.S. Weather Bureau as a "Junior Observer" at Bowman Field, Louisville, KY. He was studying meteorology at MIT, Cambridge, MA, when the United States entered WW II. Mr. Holladay petitioned to serve in the Army Air Corps and was sent overseas to San Severo, Italy, where he served as Weather Officer, 12th Weather Squadron, attached to Air Force HQ from May 1944 until October 1945. He achieved the rank of Captain prior to his discharge.
From 1947 to 1949 Mr. Holladay helped to set up a network of weather stations throughout the Philippines as part of the Philippine Weather Bureau Rehabilitation Project following WW II. He returned stateside in 1950 with his wife, Sallie L. Smith. The couple settled in North Platte, NE where their three children were born. Subsequent assignments found the Holladay family in Philadelphia, PA and San Juan, Puerto Rico, before moving to Hull, GA in July 1967. Mr. Holladay was the Meteorologist In Charge at the Weather Services Athens Station at Ben Epps Field until his retirement in January 1976. He was on duty when tornadoes struck Athens on 31 March and 28 May 1973.
Mr. Holladay was a charter member the Gordon's Chapel United Methodist Church "Over Fifty" Club and served as the First Vice President of the Georgia Federation Chapter and President of Athens Chapter # 548 of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE).
Mr. Holladay was preceded in death by his first wife, Sallie Smith Holladay in May 1975, and his second wife, Montez Milam Holladay in October 2006, a brother and four sisters. Survivors include a younger brother, Harold Holladay of South Fulton, TN; son, Cleveland G. Holladay (Francesca) of Tallahassee, FL; his daughters, Margaret I. Holladay of Tallahassee and Mrs. Louise M. Roth (Dan) of Bishop; 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Sunday, May 6, 2007 at 3:00 PM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, EAST with Rev. Robert Passmore officiating. Interment will be in the family plot in South Fulton, TN.
