Watkinsville, GA - Clarence Edward Burger, 91, passed away at his home June 7, 2011 following a period of declining health. Mr. Burger was born on October 03, 1919 in Farmington, Georgia to Charlie Clifford Burger and Josephine Giles Burger. Mr. Burger served his country with honor in the United States Army from 1942 until 1945 where he received numerous medals and commendations. He remained active in the U.S. Army Reserves until his retirement in 1979. Following his service in the U.S. Army, he worked for 32 years as a rural mail carrier, where he was known to be the first one to be there to lend a helping hand for anyone who needed help.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, George Burger, Harrell Burger, Emory Burger and Hershel Burger; sisters, Evie Burger, Edna Peck and Leah Carson. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Mary Ella Burger, as well as a number of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and many close friends and family.
Funeral services will be Friday, June 10, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, WEST with Leslie Pulley and Scott Hamilton officiating. Interment will follow at Farmington Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be nephews, Alton Burger, Richard Burger, Danny Burger, Jordan Peck, Lucas Peck and Robert Cunningham.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, June 9, 2011 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support, 1199 Prince Avenue, Athens, GA 30606.
The family would like to offer special thanks to Laquina Dillard and Dessie Cobb for all the wonderful care they provided.
