Claire Craven Brown, 66, of Athens, Georgia was welcomed into Heaven on December 17, 2020. After a long, courageous battle with cancer and complications from a bone marrow transplant, she is finally healed and made new.
Born in Villa Rica, Georgia, she was a beloved daughter of the late A.B and Frances Grizzard Craven. Upon graduating from Douglas County High School, Claire attended the University of Georgia, where she obtained undergraduate and master’s degrees. She fell in love with “Dawg Country” and chose to settle in and stay awhile. In 1983, she married the love of her life, J. Glenn Brown and they began their life together. They have two children, Mary Catherine Young and her husband, Carson Young, and Jamey and his wife Betsy of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. They have two grandchildren, Amelia and Thomas Young. Claire loved her children and her husband immensely, but her grandchildren stole her heart. Her greatest love was her family.
Claire is also survived by two sisters, Carol Barnett of Gainesville, GA and Cathy Garland and her husband Craig of Fayetteville, GA along with a number of nieces and nephews.
Throughout her life, Claire loved others and constantly served her family, friends and community sacrificially. She was a dedicated member of the Athens Cancer Auxiliary for many years and was very involved in the Junior League of Athens. She served as Junior League President in 1993- 1994. She was also a member of First Baptist Church. Claire did not miss an opportunity to be involved, especially when the event involved her children. She did not miss a dance recital, sporting event, school event, PTA meeting, field trip, school trip, college tour, parents weekend - you name it, she was there.
Claire was a dedicated mother, wife, family member and friend, and she will be missed greatly. Although those left behind are grieving, we rejoice in her healing. Her legacy of strength, dedication, service and love will carry on with us forever.
Graveside services will be Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Oconee Hill Cemetery with Frank Granger officiating. We welcome all who feel comfortable attending to join us in celebrating Claire’s life. We do kindly ask that anyone attending wear a face covering.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University winshipcancer.emory.edu
