Christine “Chris” Altizer, 71, passed away August 14, 2019, after a difficult battle with cancer. Chris was born in Lancaster, PA to Carolyn Von Stetten and Lewis Edwards. Chris was an early survivor of Rh-factor disease, which resulted in numerous blood transfusions during her first year of life, and gave Chris her lasting feisty temperament. Chris grew up in West Chester, PA, and graduated from B. Reed Henderson High School in 1966, where she played field hockey, lacrosse, and band. Chris attended the University of Delaware, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education in 1970. While at the University of Delaware, Chris met her husband, Jim, and they were married for nearly 50 years.
After moving to York County, PA, Chris taught at St. Joseph’s School and Dallastown Middle School. Chris attended York College and earned a Secondary Teaching degree in English Education. Chris especially enjoyed theatrical productions with her students and became involved with York Little Theater. Between 1991-2004, she and Jim lived in Binghamton, NY, Huntsville, AL, Houston, TX and Memphis, TN.
In 2005, Chris and Jim moved to Watkinsville, Georgia to be closer to their daughter Sonia (Andrew Davis), a professor at University of Georgia, and their son James (Karen W.), an operations manager with Cormetech in North Carolina. They have four grandsons: Oscar and Owen Davis, and Brandon and Matthew Altizer. Chris is also survived by her sister, Carole Evans (Bob), who lives in Delaware, who she spoke to nearly every day.
After retiring, Chris enjoyed spending time with her rescue animals, including three horses and many cats. While not known for her cooking talents, Chris’s decorating and landscaping skills were exceptional. In honor of her memory, the family suggests donations be made to support the Georgia Equine Rescue League (156 Clarke Ave, Social Circle, GA 30025) or a local animal organization of your choice.
