Charlotte Mathis McNeil passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at her residence in Arnoldsville, Georgia. Charlotte was born on June 12, 1934 in Columbus, Georgia to The Honorable Charles Columbus Mathis and Cora Stanley Mathis. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband The Reverend Doctor James Henry (Jim) McNeil, Sr.
Charlotte was a graduate of Young Harris College and the University of Georgia. She was a registered Dietitian at Emory University Hospital and then became a professor at UGA, teaching in the Food and Nutrition Department. She was distinguished as a Professor Emeritus for her outstanding work within her career. She retired in 1995. Charlotte also took the role of minister's wife with pride and served alongside her husband in many churches within the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, James H. (Hank) Jr. and Cindi McNeil, granddaughter Samantha McNeil (who teaches English as a second language in Warsaw, Poland) all of Rockford, MI; son and daughter-in-law, Charles Stanley and Sandra McNeil of Arnoldsville, GA, and grandchildren Megan M. Hardy of Gainesville, FL, Jeremy Wilkins, Savannah Wilkins, and great grandchildren Skyla and Samara, all of Lodi, Wisconsin; daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Tony Thornton, and grandchildren Will and Libby Thornton, all of Carlton, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte (Chashe) and Steve Hunnicutt, and granddaughter, Annmarie Hunnicutt, all of Long Creek, SC; grandchildren, Abbi and Clay Hunnicutt, great grandchildren Della, Eve and Dawson Hunnicutt all of Clayton, GA; and many loving and devoted caregivers.
A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, October 2, 2016 at 4:00 pm in the Chapel at Athens First United Methodist Church. The family will welcome visitors following the service in the John Wesley Parlor.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the McNeil-Mathis Scholarship Fund at Young Harris College, PO Box 275, Young Harris, GA 30582.
