Charlotte Adams Ford, 95, died July 16 in Athens. She was born Feb. 7, 1921, in Roberta, Georgia, the daughter of Henry R. Adams, Sr. and Fannie Becton Adams. She is survived by her brother Henry Adams, two of her three children, Howard (Robby) Grady Roberts (his wife Laura and children Melissa, Brent, Ashley, David and Bryan and a great-grandson Grayden), C. Becton (Becky) Ford (and her daughter Charlotte Marisa Rodriguez) as well as Kelly Arredondo, wife of her late son Frank J. Ford.
Charlotte earned her Bachelors in Journalism (1941) from the University of Georgia, where she was Women's Editor of Pandora and on the staff of The Red and Black. She earned a Masters in History from Georgia Southern University (1964) and did graduate work in the Ph.D. program at UGA (1966-68). She taught in the History Department at Georgia Southern University 1968-85, where she is credited with establishing the Women's Studies Department. Charlotte was the foremost expert on Eliza Frances Andrews (1840-1931), publishing numerous articles and presenting many academic and popular papers on this fascinating Georgia botanist and author.
Charlotte will be remembered for her enduring friendships, intellectual curiosity and independent ways.
Friends are invited to join the family at a memorial service to be held Saturday July 23 at 3 p.m.
