Charles Louis Trippi, known as “Charley” was born December 14, 1921, who was a beloved husband, father, step-father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle, has passed away at the age of 100 on October 19, 2022.
Charley was a famed UGA football player and famed pro-football placyer for the Chicago Cardinals. He also coached at UGA and for the St. Louis Cardinals who are now the Arizona Cardinals.
Charley is preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Davis Trippi; daughter, Joann Trippi Johns; his father, Joseph Trippi; mother, Joanna Attardo Trippi; step-mother, Genovieve Trippi; brother, Sam Trippi; sisters, Angie Insalaco and Mary Bruno.
Charley is survived by his wife of forty-four years, Peggy McNiven Trippi; two children, Brenda Fleeman (Randy) of Nicholson, GA; Charles Trippi, Jr. (Carla) of Duluth, GA; three step-children, Rob Bell (Patsy) of Cornelia, GA, Kim Gunnin (Keith) of Watkinsville, GA, Terry Bell (Jeanne) of Gainesville, GA; fifteen grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
To name a few of Charley’s accolades, he was a UGA Bulldogs football player from 1942-1946, National Champion 1942, 1943 Rose Bowl most valuable player; SEC Player of the Year 1946, All American 1946, Maxwell Award 1946, 1940’s All-Decade Team. Pro football player for the Chicago Cardinals 1947-1955, All Pro 1947, 1948 & 1952, Pro Bowl 1952 &1953. Inducted into College Football Hall of Fame 1959, Pro Football Hall of Fame 1968, National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame 1978 and UGA Circle of Honor 1996.
Played for the Atlanta Crackers in 1947, but decided football was to be his career choice.
The family request in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to a football, baseball or any sport youth program in his honor.
At this time, the family requests privacy as per the deceased’s request to be cremated with no public service.
