Charles E. Wynes, age 84, of Maxeys, Ga., died Friday, June 13, 2014.
Born in Rectortown, Va., on Aug. 11, 1929, he was the son of the late Charles and Mae Deane Wynes.
Mr. Wynes was a veteran of the Korean conflict, where he served as a Lt. Commander with the United States Naval Reserve. He received his B.S. from James Madison University in 1952, then in 1957, he received his M.A. from the University of Virginia, where he also earned his PhD in 1968. Mr. Wynes was an instructor from 1958-1961, and then Assistant Professor from 1961-1962 at Texas A&M University, Assistant Professor from 1962-1966, Associate Professor from 1966-1970, and Assistant Dean from 1968-1971 at the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia. He was a Professor at the University of Georgia from 1979 until his retirement in 1988.
He was the author of numerous articles, and many books. Co-author of "A History of Georgia", which was commissioned by Jimmy Carter, who was president at the time in 1974. Also, several other books including one in particular, "Dr. Charles Richard Drew, the Man and Myth", a biography about the man that perfected the use of blood plasma rather than whole blood for transfusions, particularly in the field of battle in World War II, and also mass collection of whole blood, which saved countless lives, in addition, this work is being considered for movie production.
Survivors include his loving wife, Carolyn; daughter, Mary Anna; and sons, Johnny and Will.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Athens Memory Gardens with Johnny Burt and Nash Boney officiating.
The family will receive friends Monday, June 16, 2014, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Lord and Stephens, East is in charge of arrangements.
