Charles H. Holcomb, age 84, of Bishop passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 2, after an extended illness. Mr. Holcomb was born on March 3, 1930, in rural Oconee County, to the late Glenn Alexander Holcomb and Lena Barnett Holcomb. Mr. Holcomb was a farmer and later sheriff of his native Oconee County from 1965 to 1988. In his first year in office, he had one part-time deputy who lived in the jail. When he retired, the office employed 18 workers.
Mr. Holcomb was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sara Holcomb Maxey.
Mr. Holcomb is survived by his wife, Jean Holcomb; a daughter and son-in-law, Karey and Jim Russell of Winder; son and daughter-in-law Kent and Bethany Holcomb of Bishop; and a son and daughter-in-law Todd and Tammy Holcomb of Apex, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11AM Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home West, Jimmy Daniel Road, Bogart. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7p.m. on Friday, September 5 at the funeral home.
