Winterville - Charles R. (Red) Hancock, Jr., age 81, died Thursday, December 18, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospice House.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
A native of Barrow County , he was the son of the late Charles Robert Hancock, Sr. and Bonita Claire Wall Hancock and was preceded in death by his only sister, Annie Reid Jones. He served his country during WWII aboard the USS Princeton and USS Charger. Red was a member of Winterville United Methodist Church and was a charter member of the Winterville Lions Club. He began his working career with Southern Airways at the Athens Ben Epps Airport as an Assistant Manager and retiring from he US National Weather Service as a Weather Radar Specialist after 28 years. His voice was familiar to many as he gave the daily forecast for Athens and the surrounding area on the local radio stations. After his retirement, he enjoyed spending time golfing, gardening and traveling with his wife. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 58 ½ years, Jean T. Hancock; children: Teresa (Mike) H. Cumuze of Watkinville, David L. Hancock of Marietta , grandchildren: Kelli Cumuze of Wilmington , NC , Kristen (Mike) Feutral of Smyrna , Mick Cumuze of Watkinsville; great grandchildren: Kaleigh Feutral and Colton Feutral.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Hospice House or Winterville United Methodist Church .
