Charles Richard Grimes passed away peacefully on January 3, 2016 at St. Mary's Hospice House in Athens, GA. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend by all who knew and loved him.
Charles was born in Macon to Hope and Francis Grimes on July 25, 1940. He attended Lanier High School, graduating in 1959. Upon graduation, he began working for Coleman Meadows and Pate Drug Company. In his role as Sales Representative, Charles traveled extensively throughout the state of Georgia making many friends and earning loyal customers in the retail pharmacy business.
In retirement, Charles embraced his adopted community of Oconee County by actively involving himself in community service and organizations. He was an active member of the Oconee County Rotary Club, where he served as President, and earned the distinction of Paul Harris Fellow.
Charles' love of service was evident in his dedication to the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce. As chair of the annual Fall Festival in 2002, he was recognized as the Chamber Volunteer of the Year. He was later tapped as President of the Chamber and led that organization from 2004-2009.
Charles was a faithful member of Athens First United Methodist Church where he served as an offering steward and usher. He was a life-long member of the Tumbleweeds Sunday School Class.
Charles adored his grandchildren and his furry friends, Maggie and Millie. He enjoyed travel abroad as well as within the United States. Charles especially enjoyed his annual trip to St. Simons Island with his family and friends.
Charles is survived by his wife of 35 years, Patricia Jones Grimes; a son, Christopher (Jane) of London, England; grandchildren, Charlotte and Henry; a sister, Mary Alice Mills (Jim) of Macon and a brother, Len (Elaine) of Greenwood SC. His extended family included in laws, Margie and Ed Jones of Macon, Sherry and Dan Sawyer of Bishop and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Thursday, January 7, 2016 from 9-10:30 am at Lord and Stephens West followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11 o'clock at Lord and Stephens West. Following the service, friends are invited to join the family at the family home at 1060 Victoria Road Watkinsville, Ga. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Athens First United Methodist Church, the Athens Area Humane Society or a charitable organization of their choice. www.lordandstephens.com
