Charles Barron

March 25, 1922 — April 27, 2018

Charles Edward Barron, 96, born 3/25/22 of Athens, GA passed away peacefully on 4/27/18. A native of Atlanta, he was the son of the late James Pressley Barron and Ruth Felder Barron and the husband of the late Lalla Farmer Barron for 68 years. He was a graduate of Tech High in Atlanta, GA as well as the University of GA School of Business Administration. A veteran of World War II, he served for 4 years in the U.S. Navy primarily in the Pacific Theater.

A resident of Athens for 63 years, he first came to Athens in 1955 as Chief Accountant at General Time. After 10 years, he established the first rental center in the area and was owner and operator of Barron's Rental Center for 23 years retiring in 1988. He also served as president and treasurer of the Southeastern Rental Operators Association.

Mr. Barron was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and was a member of the House Corporation for many years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Athens Rotary Club, UGA Presidents Club and Founders Club, Athens Cancer Society Board and President of the U.S. Too Prostate Cancer Support Group, and was formally active in the Boy Scouts of America.

In addition to his wife, he was proceeded in death by his twin brother W. Davis Barron of Atlanta, GA, his older brother James Pressley Barron, Jr. of Lynchburg, Va., and his son Joe Marshall Barron of Greenville, SC.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Athens First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Survivors include a daughter Dr. Ruth Barron Long and husband William Long of Franklin, TN, a son Charles Edward Barron, Jr. and wife Leslie Barron and daughter-in-law Becky Barron. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Marshall Barron and wife Liza Barron, Greenville, SC and Jane Hanisch and husband David Hanisch of Charlotte, NC, Laura Elmer and husband David Elmer of Rome, GA, Lalla Anne Tufts and husband Christopher Tufts of Nashville, and Barry Long, Hallie Long and Cynthia Long of Nashville, TN, and three great grandchildren, Davis Barron, Libby Barron and Elliot Elmer.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorials be sent to First United Methodist Church, Lumpkin St. Athens, GA 30601 or the American Cancer Society.

Lord and Stephens, WEST, is in charge of arrangements.
