Carolyn Sophie (Brandt) Woods

March 18, 1937 — August 23, 2014

Carolyn (SoSo) Sophie Brandt Woods, 77, of Athens, passed away on August 23, 2014, lovingly surrounded by family at home. Beloved by all who knew her, she was born in Union, South Carolina on March 18, 1937 to Nelle Nuckles Haile Brandt and Rev. Frederick William Brandt. After growing up in Charleston and Columbia, South Carolina she graduated from Newberry College Magna Cum Laude in 1958 and then taught school at Fort Benning, Georgia. In 1959 she married Martin K. Baker and in1960 they moved to Chicago where they had three children, Cheryl Lynn, Kerri Marie, and Martin Kurjian II. Carolyn and Martin were divorced in 1966. In 1968, she married Robert Wayne Woods. In 1970, Carolyn and Wayne had their daughter, Melissa Beth Woods (Hendrickson) and the family moved to Florissant, Missouri. In 1974, the family moved to Athens and settled here. In 1978, Carolyn graduated with highest honors from the Nursing School at the Medical College of Georgia, and then worked as a R.N. at Athens Regional Medical Center until she retired.
Carolyn is survived by her husband Wayne, sister Estelle Elizabeth Brandt, brother Frederick William Brandt, Jr., children Kerri, Martin, and Melissa, her step-sons Tony and Wesley Woods, her grandchildren Harrison Brandt McGill and Sophie Grace Pettie, and step-grandchildren Brittany and Jeremiah Woods.
A memorial service will be held for Carolyn at a later date.
