Carolyn Daisy Whitworth, 93, of Big Canoe, GA died on Friday, November 3, 2023.
Born to John Franklin Chandler and Maude McCannon Chandler in Madison County, Carolyn grew up on a farm in Colbert and had a happy childhood. She married Samuel C. Whitworth and worked for many years as secretary of New Prospect Baptist Church in Anderson, SC where she taught Sunday school and led many Bible studies. Her faith and spirituality remained strong throughout her life; her Bible and prayer journal were on her nightstand when she died.
Carolyn was a woman of many talents and prodigious creativity: she was a prolific painter in oil, watercolors, acrylics, and pen and ink, as well as an accomplished seamstress. She was also an excellent cook and an avid gardener who could bring plants back from the dead. She not only fostered creativity in herself but in others as well, passing down her spark to her children and grandchildren. She was a true people person who could make an instant friend out of any stranger. She even charmed her hospice nurses.
Along with her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Samuel C. Whitworth, Jr.; a brother, Billy Chandler; and her sister, Peggy Chandler Seay.
Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Susan Nilex O’Brien (George), and her son, John Douglas Whitworth; her brother, Bobby Chandler (Miriam); nine grandchildren: Shea, Kelley, Erinn, Tom, Ashleigh, Chaz, Daniel, Levi, and Angi; and fourteen great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 19 at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, Danielsville at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
