Carol Anderson Nimmons of Watkinsville, former resident of Oglethorpe County and Athens, died on 8/21/2023 at the age of 82. She was the daughter to the late John Lee and Ruth Smith Anderson. She was preceded in death by her sister, Jan A. McGahee of Roswell, and a brother, Dr. John Anderson of Macon.
She lived in Jefferson, Georgia until a teenager when her family moved to the Anderson homeplace outside of Winterville. Her father and mother instilled in her traditional values, respect for others and a desire for learning.
Carol graduated from Athens High School. She received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and an M.ED. from the University of Georgia.
In South Carolina, Carol became a newspaper reporter. Later, she was employed by Athens Newspapers. At the University of Georgia, she was an information specialist for Auxiliary Services but retired as an Extension editor for the Cooperative Extension Service. She won numerous national awards for her publishing efforts. Aside from Extension, she published her own booklets on children’s safety and manners. After retirement, she was certified as a private investigator and worked in the field for two years. In later life, she enjoyed writing plays and skits and was a published playwright.
Carol was a lover of animals and the outdoors. She developed a farm outside of Crawford where she kept horses, cattle, and other animals. She liked to entertain at Ahawi Ridge fishing, riding horses, picnicking, and hiking.
Carol was adventuresome and loved to travel. Among her adventures was a trip around the United States in an old Ford. She continued to travel with friends to foreign places throughout her life.
She believed in giving to others and volunteered at many places including Piedmont Regional Medical Center, St. Mary’s Hospice, Oconee DFACS, and other organizations. As president of the Oconee River Resource Conservation Development Council, she received the Humanitarian and Volunteer of the Year awards. She bowled with the Silver Eagles Bowling League for years.
Carol loved her church, Grace Fellowship, where she was actively involved.
She loved the Lord, her family, and her friends in that order.
Survivors include sons Thomas Anderson “Andy” Nimmons (Heather) of Lexington, their children: Madison, Tristan, Tommy, Ava, Meadow, Mylee, Memree, Mercee; son Allen Bowen Nimmons (Marie) of Watkinsville, their children: Bowen, Wyatt, John, Ruth, Maggie, and Charles.
Memorial Service will be held at Grace Fellowship Church in Bogart, GA on Saturday, August 26, 2023, with Pastor Tony Vismor presiding.
