"The most beautiful voice in the world is that of an educated southern woman." Winston Churchill
Carol Ann McCommon Downs, age 75, of Athens, GA, was the epitome of a strong, southern woman. Most people who met her throughout her distinguished life will tell you that her calm presence is what they remember most. The way she could comfort, praise, advise and teach, made you feel like you were the most important person in the room. Whether Carol was walking down the halls of Athens High School (Class of 58) or directing a large convention at the University of Georgia Center, she was always poised and graceful in pursuit of her dreams. Born to Jeanne' McCommon Downs and Edward Hodgson Downs, in Athens, Georgia, on August 5, 1940, she was the second child of three daughters; Linda Downs Easterlin (Bill) of Atlanta, GA and Charm Downs McCall (Larry) of Hoschton, GA. As an Alpha Delta Pi and Captain of the Georgettes at the University of Georgia, she shared her love of dance, music, visual arts and language. She married and had three children; Linda Catherine Fowler Douthard (Alexander) of Gay, GA, Leonard Aubrey Fowler III (Lisa), of Statham, GA and Christopher Lindsey Fowler, of Stone Mountain, GA. She always encouraged her children to follow their dreams and supported their interests in music, dancing, art, theatre and education. She was the director of the Athens YWCO/Fowler Dancers while she continued her education at UGA. She would go on to receive her Doctorate in Adult Education. However, her strongest voice was her passion for art. By working for Burton & Burton, as an creative design artist, she left her legacy on balloons, ceramics and collections sold around the world. She later married her beloved college friend, Charles Myers Davis, Sr. of Irmo, SC, and they enjoyed many activities together with her step children, Charles Myers Davis, Jr. (Alicia) of Columbia, SC and Christiann Davis Broughton (Richard) of Irmo, SC. Her love of travel sent her to many exotic places; but her favorites were to go to the mountains with her dulcimer and the beaches with her paintbrush. A devout Episcopalian, she supported the Bethlehem Ministry, the Athens Clarke Heritage Foundation, the Episcopal Dream groups, the North Georgia Foothills Dulcimer Association and the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation. She is also survived by her grandson, Alexander Keith Douthard, Gay, GA and her daughter-in-law, Lisa Solomon, Statham, GA. We will always share her beautiful butterflies and joyful angels as they carry her spirit to the heavens. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Gregory the Great Episcopal Church, 3195 Barnett Shoals Road, Athens, GA, 30605, on July 27, 2016, at 1:00 PM, with a reception following in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bethlehem Ministry, The Partnership for Gynecological Cancer Support (Providing Inspiration, Hope, & Assistance so that No One makes the Journey Alone), or The Athens YWCO.
