Captain John A. Smith, 85, of Hull, died Friday, July 19, 2019.

Born in Oconee County, he was a son of the late William Johnson Smith and Maddie Alexander Smith. John was a Veteran of the United States Army and a lifetime member and former Post Commander with VFW Post #2872. He retired from Athens-Clarke County Fire Department after 30 years. John was a Boy Scouts Scout Master and an avid fisherman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lavon Damron Smith Herring; one son, Johnny “Smitty” Smith; his second wife, Mavis Hammonds Smith and his third wife, Mary Lou Spratlin Smith.

Survivors include two children, David Smith (Charlene) and Debbie Sickles (Bruce); four grandchildren, Kristi, Laura, Kyle and Kevin and 14 great-granchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at 11:00 am at Lord and Stephens, East. Interment will follow at Athens Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. Pallbearers will be the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 1349 W Peachtree St NE #1800, Atlanta, GA 30309.
