Bishop Douglas C Hammond

Bishop Douglas C. Hammond, 83, of Watkinsville, died January 30, 2021.  Born in Athens, he was a son of the late Obie C. and Rosa Kent Hammond and was preceded in death by his son, Douglas David Hammond in 2002, brothers, Allen, James, Cyril, Curtis, Hubert and Bert Hammond and sisters, Era Hicks and Lorrelle Hammond.

Known affectionately as Papa Hammond and with a big heart, he loved and was loved by many.  Before going into full time ministry, he was a jack of all trades including working as a mechanic at Thomas Textile, owner of Hammond Construction and owner of a tire store.  He entered full time ministry in 1972 when he established Watkinsville Church of The Lord Jesus Christ, now New Life Apostolic Church where he pastored for 30 years.  Bishop Hammond served as Georgia District Superintendent of the Assemblies of the Lord Jesus Christ for 16 years.  Retiring in 2002, the Georgia Legislature declared April 5, 2002 Bishop Hammond Day.  In addition to his ministry, he will be remembered for his loving adoration for his wife and family.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Jewell Moon Hammond; son and daughter in law, Rev. Tim Hammond and his wife Dorcas; two daughters in law, Gail Leggett and Leesa Hammond; brother, Howard Hammond; sisters, Irene O’Dillon, Ruth Wilson and Sandra Pruitt; Alma and Richard Bolding and Jo Moon; grandchildren, Dave (Sandy) Hammond, Kevin (Rebekah) Hammond, Amy Brownlee, Tasha (Ryan) Mathis, Dusty (Beth) Hammond, Kyle Hammond, Zach (Lauren) Hammond and Autumn (Elijah) Mayo; 14 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Lord and Stephens, WEST, Monday, February 1, 2021 from 4:00 until 7:00 PM.

Private family service will be held on Tuesday at 11 am followed by burial at Oconee Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Nehemiah Project for the building of the new sanctuary at New Life Apostolic Church.
