Billy Joe "B.J." Smith, 69, died March 7, 2005.
A native of Reisel, Texas, he was a son of the late Barney L. and Rachel M. Smith. Mr. Smith retired in 1990 after serving thirty-five years in Federal service. The last fifteen years were spent as meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service in Athens, which at that time was the largest meterological data collection station in Georgia.
Mr. Smith served on a number of public service boards and committees including, Northeast Georgia Workforce Board, Madison County Area Resource Team, and Madison County Chamber of Commerce Economic Development. He also served Athens AARP Group, where he was an instructor for their Safe Driver Program. Mr. Smith was an elder and member of the general board of Athens Christian Church, a charter member of the National Weather Association and a verteran of the United States Air Force from 1955 until 1959, with service of eighteen months in England.
Funeral services will be Friday, March 11, 2005 at 3:00 PM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens, EAST. Pastors Marv Westfall and Carl Shearer wil officiate. Interment will be in Colbert Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Bertha Jeske Smith; children, Kathy Smith Ricks and husband, Jim, of Bogart, Ronald Lee Smith and wife, Lisa, of Cary, NC, Cynthia Smith Shoe and husband, Charley, of Boaz, AL; sisters, Carole Jean Smith Key and Deborah Smith Glass, both of Waco, TX; grandchildren, Kenneth Ray Shoe of Athens, Savannah Marie Smith of Cary, NC, Austin Lee Smith of Cary, NC; step-granddaughter, Kristen Nicole Allen of Watkinsville; serveral nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at the funeral home.
