Billy L. Shirey

Billy (Bill) Shirey, 87, of Athens, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 9, 2022. He was surrounded by his family.

Born April 18, 1935, in Winfield, Alabama. He was the son of the late Martin Floyd Shirey and Eva Pearl Henderson Shirey. He is preceded in death by his brothers, John Clifton, Paul, and Gilbert and his sisters Jessie Norris, Jenny Guin, Jimmie Lou Starr and Nell Bailey.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Sue Lowe Shirey. Their children, Lee (Cindy) Shirey of Monroe, GA. Dawn Blizard of Nashville, TN. and Jeff (Erin) Winter-Shirey of Athens, Ga.. Their grandchildren Kristopher (Jessica) Shirey, Tiffany Smith, Will Blizard, Joshua Shirey, Brooks Blizard, Asa Winter-Shirey, Tristan Shirey, and Eli Winter-Shirey. 5 great grandchildren, Trevor, Lexi, and Taylan Smith, Millie and Violet Shirey, and several nieces and nephews in Alabama.

Bill was a member of the United States Air Force and served during the Berlin Crisis in France. After serving in the Air Force, he went to work for the Ivan Allen Co., an office supply company out of Atlanta, Ga. He went on to serve as the president of the Athens, Ga branch. He retired after 30 years with the company. He was a member of the Athens Rotary club and also a member of Watkinsville First Christian Church.

Bill enjoyed the outdoors. His favorite was deer hunting with his sons and grandsons. He also enjoyed fishing and traveling around North America and Canada. Any time spent with his family was time well spent.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at 3:00 pm at Lord and Stephens, West. Interment will follow at Good Hope Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 until 3:00 pm at the funeral home.
