Betty Carico Williams passed away on the twenty-fourth of March, 2013 at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, Georgia. She born on April 11, 1932 in Galax, Virginia to William Dewey Carico and Hazel Jones Carico.
Betty grew up in Galax, Virginia. After attending high school in Galax, she attended Radford College in Radford, Virginia where she received a degree in art education.
After college, Betty held various teaching positions before starting a family, and eventually applied her educational background and personal talents to every aspect of her life.
Betty married Floyd Wendell (Wen) Williams in Blacksburg, Virginia on December 20th, 1952. They were happily married for over 60 years. She was a patron of the Classic Center Foundation and Athens Symphony Orchestra.
Throughout her life, Betty cultivated a broad range of interests and talents. Betty was known by her friends and family as a gifted artist, gardener, interior designer, cook, sewing expert and floral arranger. Betty's contributions were widely known. Her talents were often on display in the form of floral arrangements, food, and artistic decorating of her home and the homes of others. Her good cheer and generosity were boundless. Socially active and selfless of her time and energy, Betty's skills enhanced many major events in the lives of her friends and family.
With her husband Wen, Betty enjoyed travel, visiting nearly every European country, and cultivating friendships in many others. At home, her lifelong passion for gardening was central to her daily life, and from 1996 until 2012, she worked tirelessly to complete her vision for a full English garden at her home in the Five Points area. Betty was intellectually curious, consuming dozens of books each year to pursue her interests in current affairs, politics, history and culture.
Betty loved and cared for her family over five generations as a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Known affectionately by her grandchildren as "Mama Betty", she traveled frequently to graduations, weddings and birthdays as an active and generous matriarch of her growing family.
Betty is survived by her spouse, Wen Williams, son Dale Williams and daughter-in-law Sabrina Young Willliams of Kiawah Island, SC; daughter Dana Williams of Bozeman, MT; granddaughter Lindsey Williams Drath, grandson-in-law Ethan Drath and great-granddaughter Elizabeth Drath of Washington, DC; granddaughter Whitney Williams Cole, grandson-in-law Charles Cole III of Charleston, SC; grandson Cameron Williams of New York City, NY; and grandson Kenneth Kansky of Union City, CA
A memorial service will be held at the chapel of Lord & Stephens, WEST on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 5:00pm. The Reverend Paul Baxley will offiicate at the memorial. A reception for friends and relatives will be held at Trumps, 2026 S Milledge Ave, Athens, GA at 6:30pm following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the State Botanical Garden of Georgia.
