Betty Jo Sumners Forbus, 79, wife of the late William Roy Forbus, Jr., died Tuesday, June 4, 2013.
Born in Goodwater, AL, and raised in Alexander City, AL, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Harlan Sumners and Minnie Culberson Sumners. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, William Roy "Bill" Forbus, III, and brothers: Aldus Earl Sumners and Bobby Harlan Sumners. After graduating from high school, Betty moved to Birmingham, AL, and attended Business School, worked for the phone company, and was a model. Once moving to Athens, she worked for the Oconee County School System and retired from Oconee County High School. She served as a Brownie Troop Leader. She was a long-time member of Friendship Presbyterian Church, where she had worked for the Preschool. She also volunteered with ACTS.
Survivors include her daughter: Betty Whitaker of Athens; sisters: Charlene Sumners Price of Decatur, AL, Juanita Sumners Price of Kiln, MS; grandsons: Charles Lee Whitaker (Abbie) of Beaufort, SC, and William Donald Whitaker of Athens, GA.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 3PM at Friendship Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ron Bowie officiating. The burial will be held at 2PM at Oconee Memorial Park prior to the service at the church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM at the Funeral Home on Friday, June 7.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Friendship Presbyterian Church Building Fund or the charity of one's choice.
