Betty Joyce Brooks

Betty Joyce Thurmond Brooks, 92, of Athens, passed away on May 4, 2024.

Born in Bostwick, GA on August 22, 1931 to the late Harry Claude Thurmond and Lithonia Mobley Thurmond, Betty was a lifelong resident of the Athens area. On April 16, 1949, she married Walter Lee Brooks, Sr., and this year they celebrated 75 years of marriage. Betty and Walter were members of the Antique Automobile Club of America, and before her retirement, Betty worked as the business manager at Auto Glass Center. She was a member of Johnson Drive Baptist Church and attended White Hall Baptist Church.

Betty is survived by her loving husband of 75 years, Walter; their children, Geraldine McCants (Chuck) and Lee Brooks (Cathy); five grandchildren: Howard McCants III (Rebecca), Joyce McCants Smith, Teri Tankersley (Russell), Jan Fleming (Allen), and Robin Purcell (Shane); twelve great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A public graveside entombment will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at Evergreen Memorial Park at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Anthony Watts officiating. Friends are welcome.
