Winterville, GA - Elizabeth "Bessie" Jeannette Hancock Smith, 90, died October 23, 2009.
Born in Oglethorpe County and a lifelong resident of this area, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas and Mary Jane Erwin Hancock. In earlier years, she worked for Thomas Textile. She was a member of Winterville First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Smith was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her family was her whole life. She was a dedicated caretaker to her husband, her mother, 5 sisters and 3 brothers.
Funeral services will be Monday, October 26, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, EAST with Dr. Sheila Bookout officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Jerome Martin, John Greeson, Steve Parson, Wayne Parson, Dan Henson, Eddie Chambers, Barry Elder and Chuck Elder.
Survivors include her husband of 72 years, Millard V. Smith; daughters, Jan Hubert and her husband, Harold of Arnoldsville; Faye Chambers and her husband William Edward of Watkinsville; grandson, Chuck Elder, his wife Kay and their children, Cary, Katie and Collin; grandson, Eddie Chambers, his wife Bonnie and their children, Noah, Ethan and Dylan; grandson, Barry Elder, his wife Elizabeth and their children Max and Janie; and granddaughter, Kym Chambers; brother, Homer Hancock and his wife, Sue of Winterville and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
Flowers are optional. Memorials may be made in honor of Chuck Elder to ALS Foundation of Georgia, 1995 Cliff Valley Way, Suite 116, Atlanta, GA 30329.
Lord and Stephens, EAST is in charge of arrangements.
