Bernice P. Grimes, age 86, of Crawford, Georgia, entered her heavenly home on Friday, February 9, 2024. She was preceded in death by her mother, Rev. Grace Palmer and her father, Clyde Palmer.
Mrs. Grimes is survived by her husband of 64 years, Claude Neil Grimes, her son Stanley N. Grimes (Daphne), her daughter Deborah C. Miller (Rocky), and her sister Barbara Palmer.
She also leaves behind four granddaughters: Lauren Acrey (Brad), Ashley House (Jonathan), Elisabeth Gibbon (Chase), and Sarah Black (Nate). In addition, she was Nana to eight great-grandchildren.
A lifelong resident of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Grimes graduated from OCHS in 1955. After graduation, she attended Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Georgia.
Bernice was an active member of Welcome Avenue Congregational Holiness Church. She served as Sunday school teacher, pianist, and bookkeeper for many years.
Bernice loved opening her home to family and friends who were always eager to partake in her delicious home cooked meals. She was known for her roast beef, chicken pot pie, potato salad, and biscuits. However, nothing could compare to her famous coconut and German chocolate cakes.
Bernice always put her family’s needs above her own. She was a constant help to her husband Neil. She loved him faithfully, supported him unwaveringly, and was truly his best friend. She also supported her children in all of their endeavors. She collected newspaper clippings about all of their accomplishments. Nothing made her happier than having her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren all together under her roof.
Most importantly, she was the spiritual matriarch of her family. She taught her children and grandchildren about the love of Jesus and demonstrated His character in every aspect of her life. She constantly pointed others to Him, even in her final days. Shortly before she passed, she sang the words, “He is the Mighty King, Master of everything, His Name is wonderful, Jesus my Lord.” She has surely seen His face.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Monday, February 12, at Lord and Stephens East. The funeral service will take place at 2 PM on Tuesday, February 13, at Welcome Avenue Congregational Holiness Church.
Lord and Stephens, East is in charge of arrangements.
