Barbara Brown Segars, 81 of Athens, passed away peacefully at home Friday, November 10, 2023 after an extended illness, surrounded by family and friends. Mrs. Segars, originally from Homer, GA, also lived in Tifton before settling in Athens in 1982. She was the daughter of the late James Wilton Brown and Rosalee Keesee Brown of Banks County, GA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Dr. William “Bill” Segars, PHD.
As a teenager, she was an active member of the 4-H Club. In 1959, at 17 years old, she became the National 4-H Electric Program Winner. Through her project efforts, as a high school senior, more than half of the homes in Banks County, GA were properly wired and lighted.
She attended North Georgia College where she studied home economics. At the end of her sophomore year, she married Bill Segars and transferred to the University of Georgia.
She served in various roles for several companies, most recently as a tax accountant with The Tax Shelter. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, writing, and genealogy research. She was also the author of a book titled Piddles Patches and Pallets.
Mrs. Segars is survived by her brother James Dewey Brown (Patricia) of Richmond, VA, daughter Alecia Segars Provenzano (Michael) of Athens, GA, and son Alan Segars (Jacquie) of Milton, GA. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Chris Morris (Amy), Stephen Morris (Emma), and Sarah Segars, as well as her great grandchildren AvaGrace Morris, Rosalee Morris, Lorelai Morris, and Eliza Anne Morris.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 14, 2023 from 10:00 – 11:00 am at Lord and Stephens, East. Funeral services will be held immediately in the chapel. Interment will follow privately at Nails Creek Baptist Church, Homer, GA.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the UGA 4-H General Fund.
