Anne B. Asbury, 85, of Athens, GA died on January 28, 2023. The daughter of the late Estelle Barber and Thomas G. (Dude) Barber, Anne grew up in Decatur, GA and graduated from Avondale High School in 1955. Following graduation she moved to Japan with her Army spouse and had her first son. After the Army she lived in Gainesville, GA (where she had her second and third sons), then back to Decatur, finally settling in Kilmarnock, VA for 30 years. Later in life she moved to Athens, GA to be closer to family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas O. Asbury, III. Anne is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law: Mike & Audrey Hope, Tom & Tricia Hope, and Jason & Vanessa Hope; grandchildren: Kyle Hope (Viriya), Zach Hope (Stephanie), Trent Hope, and Emily Girvan (P.J.); great-grandchildren: Colton Hope, Cohen Girvan, Evelyn Hope, Sawyer Girvan, Graham Hope, Elaina Hope, Knox Girvan, and Tate Girvan. To her sons, Anne was always Mom. But to her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren she was Grandmother Anne. She loved having her family at her home for meals and games at holidays. On game days, she didn’t like to lose at anything! She would threaten to write you out of the will if you made a move against her. She was always up for a good time. Just weeks before she left us, she wore her great-grandson Graham’s dinosaur mask and laughed with him even though she felt miserable. We will miss her sass and sense of humor, wrapped up in her tiny little body. She loved her cats, reading, watching football, playing bridge, eating cake for breakfast … but most of all she will be remembered for how she loved her family so well. On Saturday, February 11, 2023, there will be a reception and memorial service at Tuckston United Methodist Church in Athens, GA. The family will receive friends at the reception from 10:00-11:00 a.m., and the service will be held immediately following the reception at 11:00 a.m.
