ARTHUR (ANDY) M. HORNE November 26, 1942-August 26, 2024

Andy, the son of Arthur M. & Lola N. Horne, was born in Gainesville, Florida on November 26, 1942. He died following emergency heart surgery at Emory University Hospital with his family at his bedside. He is survived by his lifelong spouse and partner in life of nearly 60 years, Gayle Horne; children, Sharon G. Horne (Heidi M. Levitt) (MA), A. Kevin Horne, the RV traveler, and 4 grandchildren; Lucy Horne (NC), Natalie Horne (NE), Eden Levitt- Horne (MA), Joshua Arthur Levitt-Horne (MA), and his brother Charles Horne (Sarah) (FL).

Dean Emeritus and a Distinguished Research Professor, Andy was an educator and mentor for over 40 years. As the first in his family to attend college, Andy received a degree in English education and journalism in 1965 and a master’s degree in counseling in 1967 from the University of Florida. Andy was first a middle school English teacher and then returned to university and completed his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Southern Illinois University in 1971. Andy began his career in counseling psychology as a professor at Indiana State University for 18 years before coming to the University of Georgia in 1989. He also taught a year in Germany for Boston University (1984-85) and enjoyed a sabbatical at University of Otago in New Zealand in 1996. He was a prolific writer, co-authoring 11 books and numerous articles, and directed grants associated with prevention of bullying and aggression in schools. He was a dedicated teacher and mentor to many students and a supportive colleague. At UGA he served as department head, director of training, and faculty member in the College of Education-Counseling and Human Development Services. He retired in 2006, but then other opportunities came his way. He un-retired and was first interim and then Dean of UGA’s College of Education from 2008-2012. That privilege was his most fulfilling position.

With Gayle, Andy went on many adventures. He loved spending time in Scotland, Turkey, Ireland, Armenia, Germany, New Zealand and many other places. He traveled to India and visited his daughter, Sharon, in Africa. He and Gayle spent many years enjoying the Oregon coast, a place near and dear to his heart. This past May, he and Gayle wandered France on their own, enjoying the Dordogne Region. Just prior to his passing, he and Gayle were vacationing on Cape Cod with the Levitt-Hornes. He loved spending time with his friends, attending cultural events with Gayle, reading, writing, exploring ancestry, and, most of all, being with his family. He was a loving and unfailingly supportive partner, granddad and father-in-law.

Our family is so sad that we have lost this very bright star of a human. He was a storyteller who regaled his listeners with riveting stories, rich historical context, and wise advice. Andy always found the bright side; he was compassionate, witty, a sharp thinker, unselfish, humble, and loyal. Spontaneously he would often declare, “Isn’t this truly wonderful?” Sometimes this would be at a national park viewpoint or on a beautiful coast looking at the seals, but other times it would be, “Isn’t this the best? Aren’t we the luckiest people to be here right here, right now?” in the most ordinary of places—in the aisle of a grocery store, in the classroom, on a long Montana highway, or at a backyard neighborhood gathering. As anyone who has had the chance to have Andy in their life knows, being around him made you feel pretty lucky too.

If you wish to honor, Andy, one way would be to vote in your upcoming election. Andy was an unwavering advocate for social justice, environmental causes, and public education. He was very much looking forward to voting this November.
