America Abbott, 88, of Athens, Georgia, formerly of Baton Rouge, LA, died peacefully in her sleep on March 6, 2017, at Boswell-Parker Health & Rehabilitation in Greensboro, GA. She is predeceased by her parents, Bruce R. and America (Mecca) McCoy of Baton Rouge, LA, and her late husband, William B. Abbott of Atlanta, GA.
A graduate of Baton Rouge High School and Louisiana State University, America taught English at LSU, and later completed an Ed.D. in Adult Education at UGA. She was an accomplished amateur artist, studied and painted religious iconography, was a member of the Athens Art Association, and also the National League of American Pen Women.
Survivors include her two sons, Bruce Abbott of Davis, CA, and Jeff Abbott of El Cerrito, CA; four grandchildren, Paul, Rebecca, Sarah and William Abbott; and her brother Clark McCoy of Texas.
A funeral service will be held March 25th at 11:00AM at Emmanuel Episcopal in Athens, where she was an active member. At Emmanuel she served as a Lay Eucharistic Minister, a Stephen Minister, and was active in the Cursillo Movement.
