Alice Gallas Lubbers was born in Alexandria, Egypt, August 13, 1925, the youngest of 6 children of Everett and Irene Gallas. The family arrived in America October 27, 1928, one year before the Great Depression. She was doted on by her much older four brothers and one sister and seemed to be quite precocious. She excelled in school, knew French but refused to learn her family’s native tongue, Greek; she said she wasn’t Greek, but American now. She was also quite artistic.
As a teenager, Alice rode 3 buses to get to her job at White Castle, similar to McDonald’s today. She also worked in the Chrysler building in New York City.
Alice met her future husband, Alvin A. Lubbers, while on a double date. They were married in a simple ceremony in June, 1948 and moved to Chicago, Illinois.
Alice had been brought up in a mainline Protestant church, and she was never told that she could have a personal relationship with Jesus herself until she and Al started attending Addison Street Baptist Church in Chicago. At that time both she and Alvin decided to leave their legalistic religious upbringings and personally follow Jesus. Soon thereafter, their first child, Lynette, was born, followed by Susan Beth and then Kevin Lee. In 1954 Alice and Al moved to Wheaton, Illinois to raise their family.
Alice had a gift for hospitality and hosted many family get-togethers over the years. She also liked to create pottery pieces and do crafts; she crocheted many colorful afghan blankets for various family members.
After her last child went to school she began working in Christian Publishing Houses located in Wheaton, Illinois. She also enjoyed her volunteer work at InTouch ministries for Dr Charles Stanley after she moved to Atlanta, GA. She and Alvin were “DIYers'' before it was a term.
Alice never showed favoritism toward her children and encouraged a cohesive family spirit. She enjoyed accumulating 8 grandchildren, 15 Great grand-children and great-grands (2 +).
She was definitely Queen Mother of her brood. She has “run the race and finished the course.” Thanks be to God.
