Athens - Alfred Few (Mac) McElwee died Friday, May 9, 2008, at St. Mary's Hospice House in Athens.
Mr. McElwee was born in 1920 in Dunmore, West Virginia. He received a degree in civil engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1943, and began his service with the United States Army in World War II as a Captain in the Corps of Engineers. His service in the European Theater was primarily overseeing construction of airstrips in England, France, Belgium and Germany.
Following the war, he began his career with E.I. DuPont and Company where he worked for 32 years as a field superintendent and project manager for the engineering division. He was the overseer of projects in West Virginia, Texas, Tennessee, Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, North Carolina, Florida and Georgia. After retiring in Athens, he resided there the remaining years of his life.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Williams McElwee. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Jackie McElwee. Also surviving are his son, Steve McElwee and his wife, Cindy; a granddaughter, Brandy Allgood and her husband, Chad; two great grandsons, Jesse Impeduglia and Chase Allgood; step-daughter, Cheri Carter and her husband, Tom of Bethesda, MD. Also surviving are Isabelle McElwee, sister-in-law of Marlinton, WVA; a niece, Laura June Farber and her husband, Charlie of Lewisburg, WVA; and a nephew, Charles Donovan McElwee and his wife, Robin of Crozet, VA.
Visitation will be held Sunday, May 11, 2008, from 6 - 8 p.m. at Lord and Stephens, WEST. A memorial service will be held in Marlinton, WVA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Hospice House.
