Alfred Gene Hammond, died Monday, July 20, 2009 at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A celebration of the life of Gene will be held Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 6PM at Lord & Stephens East Chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 4PM until 6PM.
Born in Miami, FL, he was the son of the late Willie Mae Murphy Owens. Gene served his country in the US Air Force and was a 1961 graduate of the University of Georgia with a major in accounting. He was the Budget Director and Assistant to the Dean for the College of Pharmacy at the University of Georgia. He worked part time until recently, at the Athens-Clarke County Tag Office. He was an avid golfer. He was also an avid University of Georgia football fan and funeral guests are invited to wear red and black to the service. Gene loved his wife and family and never knew a stranger.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years; Susannah "Susie" McCroskey Hammond; daughter: Terri Krucina of Augusta; daughters and sons in law: Toni and Tony Meadow of Athens; Tammi and Mark Amason of Columbia, TN; son: Michael Hammond of Lilburn; grandchildren: Keri, Blake, Kandice, Chris, Ryne, Craig, Kenny, Will, Cassie; great grandchild: Tavion; sisters in law: Raleigh Hunt and husband Nelson, Pat Green and husband Gerald, Missie MacDonald; cousins: Winsor Smith, Bobby Fields, Sandra Gettis, Susan Jenkins; nephews: Jeff Hunt, Johnny MacDonald, Matthew Old: nieces: Judi and husband Brian Rogers; Sue Whitekiller, Melissa Old: great niece: Amelia Rogers and his beloved pets; Gigi and Kiki
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Northeast Georgia Food Bank.
