Alan Scott

December 6, 1931 — December 6, 2016

Dr. Alan Scott, PhD, was born in London, England on December 6, 1931. He was one of three boys born to Edward and Eva Scott. Alan's childhood memories consist of playing tennis on clay courts, and playing soccer in the local league. He had a passion for soccer his entire life. After moving to Athens, Georgia in 1965, he help to start a youth league.
At age 10, during Germany's Blitz on London, Alan joined the Air Scouts and learned to ID English planes and the Luftwaffe by their engine sounds. After a bomb was dropped on his family's London home the family went to stay with relatives in Devonshire.
When he was 18, Alan developed appendicitis and required an appendectomy. His nurse, a Hungarian immigrant, would become his wife. They were married in 1954. Alan earned his PhD in Nuclear Physics from Queens College, London. In 1957 the Scott family, including two-year-old Fiona, emigrated to the United States where Alan had accepted a post doctorate teaching and research position at UCLA.
While in California, Alan, Eva and Fiona became U.S. citizens.
After a few years Alan accepted a position at the University of Minnesota. Their expanding family now included Anita, their second daughter, who is an American citizen by birth.
In 1965 Alan accepted an associate professor position at the University of Georgia, Athens. The family members reveled in the culture in Georgia and made many friends. Alan would do research during the summers. With family in tow he would go to Oakridge, TN. Or when he had a National Science Foundation Grant he would take the family to Los Alamos, NM to do research.
His research took him out of the country as well, so he and the family would travel to France, Switzerland, and Germany.
Alan retired in 1996 as a professor emeritus from UGA after 30 years of teaching and research for the University.
Alan died on his 85th birthday, December 6, 2016. He was preceded by his wife Eva, who passed away in August 2016. He is survived by his daughter Fiona and her husband Michael, who live in Savannah and by his daughter Anita, a VA physician who lives in Hawaii.
