Clarence David Bell

Clarence David Bell, 85, of Athens, Georgia died Monday, September 26, 2022.

A native of Athens, the son of the late J.C. Bell and Sallye Ruth Bell Hendon. He was a 1959 graduate of the University of Georgia and a 1976 graduate of Woodrow Wilson College of Law. After a four-year tour in the US Army as a helicopter pilot, leaving the service as First Lieutenant, he began his career in the trust area of banking with Trust Company of Georgia in Atlanta, retiring after 37 years of service, with this bank, then being SunTrust Bank.

In college, he was a member and officer of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, Scabbard & Blade, and Pershing Rifles.

In his banking career, he was on the Boards of both the Georgia Chapter and the Athens Area National Multiple Sclerosis Societies, First United Methodist Church (Athens), and served over 20 years on both the St. Mary’s Hospital and local Salvation Army Boards. He was a past member and officer in the Athens Area Kiwanis Club, on the executive committee of the trust affairs sections of the Georgia Banking Association, chairman of an annual March of Dimes campaign, and division head of an annual United Way campaign. His fiduciary duties in banking resulted in his being on the Boards of various local companies. He was a former member of the Athens Country Club, Reynolds Plantation Club at Lake Oconee, and Athens Touchdown Club.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara B. Bell and his brother, Donald Bell.

Survivors include his children Susan F. Bell of Marietta, Ga. and David C. Bell of Watkinsville, Ga., wife DeRenn H. Bell of Athens, Ga. and her children,

step-brothers Jerry Hendon of Fairhope, Alabama and Tim Hendon of Cornelia, Ga., two grandchildren, and five step-grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services will be held Sunday, October 9, 2022 at 2PM at Oconee Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Athens First United Methodist Church, 327 N. Lumpkin St., Athens, Georgia, 30601.

Family will receive friends following the graveside at a reception at the Sexton House of Oconee Hill Cemetery.
